Light Schools

Banglahelp is running in the slums of Dhaka five schools (Kindergarten – 10th grade) with over 200 children and 15 adult students per school and a total of 40+ teachers. For 11th and 12th grade, we sponsor the students to attend the Bangladesh Adventist Seminary and College (BASC) or a local public school.

The slum schools also provide education for 75 adults with a two-year literacy program.

We have a manager overseeing the schools and projects. The teachers regularly meet with the parents to discuss the progress of their children and offer tips about nutrition and hygiene.

Additionally, Banglahelp supports 4 village schools, located in Kochudara, Godaipur, Kalitola and Tokletbari.

Daulatdia Projects

Four hours from Dhaka, the town of Daulatdia is home to one of the largest brothels in the world. Over 1,500 women work here as sex worker, many being underage (from the age of 10) and against their will. Some of the sex workers live in the brothel “village” with their children and families. Banglahelp runs four projects in Daulatdia:

Sewing Machine Training Center

Banglahelp provides a six-month program for sex workers and needy women of the area to train them to operate a sewing machine. This offers the prospect of financial sustainability for them and their families, for example, by getting a job at a garment factory or starting their own sewing business at home. At the end of the course, the women are gifted with a sewing machine, an iron, and an ironing board. So far we have trained over 55 women. Every six months we train 30 women.

Safe Home

A local organization runs a safe home for the daughters of the sex workers. They live and study here so that they are away from the brothel. Banglahelp sponsors 19 girls to live here. Also, a group of nursing students from the Bangladesh Adventist Seminary and College (BASC) comes to the safe home once a month to spend time with the girls, give them health classes and play with them.

Adult School

Inside the brothel, Banglahelp runs a school for 30 sex workers, who over a two-year course learn to read and write Bengali and English. In Bangladesh, over 40% of the population are illiterate.

Ruth Childcare Center

Banglahelp runs a childcare center for 0-4 years old children in a location very close to the brothel. We look after 15 boys and 15 girls who live here. Their mothers (sex workers) are able to come, spend time with them in a safe environment.
